Started in 2001, the Dot NAME domain name extension is the only one intended for personal websites only. These domains can consist of personal or fictional names, aliases and/or other designations people are popular by. At first, only third-level registrations were allowed, so if you desired to buy john.doe.name, you would have to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration procedures were loosened and 2nd-level registrations were also allowed. Already purchased 3rd-level domain names remained functional.
